Cleveland Tornado Warning Canceled After Funnel Cloud Report in Northeast Ohio

Cleveland tornado warning-A tornado warning issued for parts of Northeast Ohio was canceled Thursday evening after a trained weather spotter reported a funnel cloud near Willoughby Hills.

The National Weather Service office in Cleveland issued the warning at 6:04 p.m. EDT on September 3, 2026. The affected area included Lake County, Geauga County and northeastern Cuyahoga County.

At the time of the warning, forecasters were tracking a powerful thunderstorm near Timberlake and Willowick. The storm was moving southeast at approximately 45 mph and was considered capable of producing a tornado.

Although a funnel cloud was reported, authorities have not confirmed that a tornado touched the ground.

The tornado warning was scheduled to remain active until 6:45 p.m. However, the National Weather Service canceled it at approximately 6:27 p.m. after the immediate tornado threat diminished.

Severe weather risks did not disappear when the tornado warning ended. Residents were advised to remain cautious because the storm system was still capable of producing damaging winds, hail, frequent lightning and localized flooding.

Where Was the Funnel Cloud Reported?

A trained weather spotter reported the funnel cloud at approximately 6:04 p.m., about one mile northwest of Willoughby Hills in Lake County.

The report prompted an urgent warning for several communities east and northeast of Cleveland.

Locations included in or near the storm’s projected path included:

  • Willowick
  • Willoughby
  • Eastlake
  • Timberlake
  • Mentor
  • Euclid
  • Painesville
  • Fairport Harbor
  • Chardon
  • Chesterland
  • Burton
  • Middlefield

Other potentially affected communities included Mayfield, Kirtland, Kirtland Hills, Richmond Heights, Parkman, Huntsburg, Montville, Waite Hill and Mentor-on-the-Lake.

By 6:15 p.m., the dangerous thunderstorm was reported near Chardon and moving southeast at approximately 55 mph.

People within the warned area were initially instructed to take shelter in a basement or an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building. Residents were also warned to stay away from windows and protect themselves from flying debris.

Was a Tornado Confirmed Near Cleveland?

As of the latest official information, there was no confirmation that a tornado reached the ground.

A funnel cloud extends downward from the base of a thunderstorm but does not automatically qualify as a tornado. It becomes a tornado when the rotating circulation reaches the ground.

Spotter observations can provide critical information to meteorologists, especially when atmospheric conditions make radar interpretation difficult. However, a reported funnel cloud does not always produce a confirmed tornado or documented tornado damage.

The National Weather Service classified the initial threat as radar indicated while also noting the funnel-cloud report from a weather spotter.

The decision to cancel the warning indicated that meteorologists no longer believed the storm posed an immediate tornado threat. That cancellation should not be interpreted as proof that the wider storm system was harmless.

Damaging Winds Remained a Concern

Powerful thunderstorms continued moving through the Cleveland metropolitan area and other parts of Northeast Ohio during the evening.

One severe thunderstorm warning identified the possibility of destructive wind gusts reaching approximately 80 mph. Winds of that strength can uproot trees, damage roofs, bring down power lines and make driving hazardous.

Reports received by the National Weather Service included fallen trees in several communities. Trees were reported down in Akron and other parts of the region as the storm moved across Northeast Ohio.

Continuous cloud-to-ground lightning was also reported with portions of the storm system.

Residents were urged to stay indoors, avoid windows and delay unnecessary travel while severe storms remained nearby. Drivers were advised never to cross flooded roads because water depth and damage beneath the surface can be difficult to judge.

Flooding and Water Rescues Reported in Ravenna

The storm system also produced heavy rainfall that created flooding concerns farther south.

Preliminary reports indicated that water rescues were conducted in Ravenna during the evening. Flooding can develop quickly during intense thunderstorms, especially in low-lying areas, underpasses and locations with poor drainage.

A tornado warning may receive the most immediate public attention, but flooding and straight-line winds can be equally dangerous. Severe wind gusts can produce damage resembling that of a weak tornado, while rapidly rising water can trap motorists with little warning.

People in affected areas should continue monitoring local emergency alerts even after one particular warning expires.

What Residents Should Do After a Warning Is Canceled

When a tornado warning is canceled, residents may leave their shelter if no other active warning applies to their location. However, they should first check current alerts and examine their surroundings for hazards.

Possible dangers following a severe thunderstorm include:

  • Fallen electrical lines
  • Broken tree limbs
  • Unstable trees
  • Flooded streets
  • Damaged buildings
  • Gas leaks
  • Debris blocking roads

Any downed wire should be treated as energized. Residents should remain well away from it and contact their electric utility or emergency services.

Anyone who smells gas or notices significant structural damage should leave the affected building and call the appropriate emergency service from a safe location.

People should also avoid entering damaged areas simply to take photographs or videos. Doing so can interfere with emergency crews and expose visitors to unstable structures, electrical hazards and falling debris.

Why Tornado Warnings Can Change Quickly

Tornado warnings are designed to provide immediate protection when radar, trained observers or other evidence indicates that a tornado may be occurring or could develop soon.

Thunderstorms can strengthen, weaken or change direction within minutes. For that reason, warnings may be extended, replaced, updated or canceled before their original expiration time.

A canceled warning does not mean officials made a mistake by issuing it. Emergency warnings are based on the best available information during a rapidly developing situation. When a funnel cloud is reported near populated communities, taking immediate precautions can save lives.

Residents should have more than one method of receiving alerts. Wireless emergency notifications, weather radios, local television and radio stations, official weather applications and local emergency-management accounts can all provide important information.

Outdoor warning sirens should not be the only source of information because they may not be audible inside every home or business.

No Injuries or Tornado Touchdown Confirmed

No deaths or injuries connected specifically to the reported funnel cloud had been confirmed in the initial official information.

There was also no verified confirmation that the funnel cloud became a tornado or caused tornado-related damage.

Damage assessments and storm reports can change as emergency crews and National Weather Service personnel receive additional information. Any later confirmation of a tornado would normally require supporting evidence such as documented ground circulation, a damage survey, verified video or additional eyewitness reports.

For now, the strongest verified account is that a funnel cloud was observed near Willoughby Hills, prompting a tornado warning for parts of Lake, Geauga and Cuyahoga counties before the warning was canceled.

Residents should continue relying on the National Weather Service, local emergency officials and established news organizations for updated information.
