The Bowling Green, Kentucky community is remembering Dr. John Edward Downing, a respected ophthalmologist, medical educator, Navy veteran, philanthropist and longtime community servant who died at the age of 88.
Dr. Downing passed away on June 27, 2026, following an accident. His beloved wife of 48 years, Sheryl Magee Downing, also died on June 27 following a lengthy illness. Their deaths on the same day marked the end of a remarkable partnership centered on family, service and helping others.
Who Was Dr. John Edward Downing?
John Edward Downing was born on August 3, 1937, in Flippin, Kentucky, to J. M. and Isabel Downing. He pursued a career in medicine and graduated from the University of Louisville School of Medicine before completing his residency in ophthalmology at Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia.
His professional life would eventually take him to Bowling Green, where he became an important figure in ophthalmology and helped provide eye care to generations of patients.
Before establishing his medical career in the community, Dr. Downing also served his country as a Captain and Flight Surgeon in the United States Navy.
A Distinguished Career in Ophthalmology
Dr. John Edward Downing established his ophthalmology practice in Bowling Green, Kentucky, initially working alongside Dr. Robert Crosby on Nellums Avenue.
Over the course of his career, Dr. Downing worked with and mentored numerous ophthalmologists and optometrists, contributing to the development of eye-care professionals in Kentucky and beyond.

Beyond medicine, Dr. Downing was deeply involved in civic and community life in Bowling Green.
He helped found the Unitarian Universalist Church in Bowling Green and served for many years as the church’s secretary.
His community involvement also included participation in the Caveman Chorus, Bowling Green Noon Lions Club and Rotary Club, as well as the local group known as the “Liars Club.”
These roles reflected a life that extended beyond professional achievement into friendship, volunteerism and service.
John and Sheryl Downing’s 48-Year Marriage
John Downing and Sheryl Magee Downing met later in life and brought their families together.
The couple married on February 14, 1978, in Bowling Green, Kentucky, with their children present. They shared 48 years of marriage and built a blended family of seven children.
Sheryl, born September 27, 1939, in Tylertown, Mississippi, worked as a licensed optician and served for many years as Optical Manager for C & D Optical. She also attended Western Kentucky University, earned a pilot’s license and studied martial arts.
According to the family’s obituary, John died following an accident on June 27, while Sheryl, who had been experiencing a lengthy illness, died shortly afterward that same day.

John and Sheryl Downing are survived by their seven children:
David Downing and his wife Kristie; Neal Downing and his wife Susan Joy; Michelle Mills-Downing; Linda Downing Whittington and her husband Rick; Kim Mills-Downing Papp and her husband Allen; Mark Downing and his wife Cathy; and Eric Downing and his wife Karlie.
Their family legacy also includes 14 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren, along with numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
Dr. Downing is also survived by his sister, Jane Cranfill of Lexington, Kentucky.
The couple were preceded in death by their parents and grandson Michael Whittington. Sheryl was also preceded in death by ten of her siblings.
Celebration of Life for John and Sheryl Downing
A private graveside service for John and Sheryl Downing was held on July 5, 2026, with family members gathering for remembrance and reflection.
A public Celebration of Life was later held on September 6, 2026, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Carroll Knicely Conference Center, Room 208, at 2355 Nashville Road in Bowling Green, Kentucky.
The family requested that, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to Orbis International or United Cajun Navy, organizations whose service-oriented missions reflected John and Sheryl Downing’s commitment to humanitarian outreach.
