Thomas King Massachusetts Obituary: Former Postmaster Remembered for 83 Years of Service and Family

MIDDLEBOROUGH, MA — Thomas Francis “Tom” King Jr., a longtime Massachusetts postal worker and former postmaster in Whitman and Randolph, has died at the age of 83. He is being remembered by his family, friends and former colleagues for a life centered on family, faith, community involvement and decades of dedicated service with the United States Postal Service.

Tom was born on May 19, 1943, in Dorchester, Massachusetts, to the late Thomas Francis King Sr. and Jean (Mizejewski) King. He was raised in Dorchester, graduated from Boston College High School and later earned his degree from Northeastern University.

A Long Career With the U.S. Postal Service

Tom devoted much of his professional life to the United States Postal Service.

His career included positions in Abington and East Bridgewater before he moved to Whitman, where he became postmaster. He later served as postmaster in Randolph, where he concluded his postal career before retiring.

His family remembered the pride he took in his work and in the friendships he developed throughout his years with the Postal Service. His career connected him with people across several Massachusetts communities and became an important part of his identity.

Family Was at the Center of His Life

In 1968, Tom married Jeanette (Daly) King. They shared 58 years of marriage and built their life together across several Massachusetts communities, eventually settling at Oak Point in Middleborough.

Their life together included family gatherings, Cape Cod vacations, dinners out, casino trips and years of shared memories with longtime friends from Dorchester.

Tom was described as a devoted husband and father who took great pride in his family. When his children were young, he became involved in their activities by coaching soccer, Little League and basketball. He also taught CCD and volunteered at school events.

Faith, Hobbies and the Personality People Remembered

Tom was a lifelong Catholic, and his faith was an important part of his daily life. His family recalled that he began his mornings with prayer and maintained a list of family members and friends for whom he wanted to pray.

Outside of work and family life, Tom enjoyed golf and fishing. He organized an annual golf trip to New Hampshire with friends and enjoyed playing cards at Oak Point.

He was also a longtime fan of the Boston Patriots and Red Sox and had been a Bruins season-ticket holder in his younger years. Music, particularly the Beatles, was another interest he enjoyed.

Those who knew him also remembered his quick wit and playful sense of humor. He could be reserved when first meeting someone, but friends came to know him for his one-liners, teasing and optimism.

Remembering Thomas F. King Jr.

Tom’s life was marked by relationships that extended well beyond his professional career.

His family remembered his loyalty, humor and generosity, along with the pride he took in the life he had built with Jeanette and their children. He was also known for asking people a simple question — whether they were happy — and genuinely caring about their answer.

Tom was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Jean King, and his brother, Kenneth King.

He is survived by his wife, Jeanette; daughter Alison King and her husband, Joshua Davis, of Providence, Rhode Island; son Timothy King and his wife, Tobey, of East Bridgewater, Massachusetts; grandchildren and great-grandchildren; sister Roberta Dionne of Pensacola, Florida; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
