Adinaluz Prieto Oyola Obituary, POLK COUNTY, Fla. — Adinaluz Prieto Oyola, a 10th-grade student at Winter Haven High School, has died following injuries sustained in a tragic school bus crash in Polk County on Monday. The collision also claimed the life of Deshawn Smith, 26, the driver of a Jeep involved in the crash.

According to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, the crash happened when a white Chevrolet Malibu crossed the double yellow center line and collided with a school bus carrying 37 students, the bus driver, and the driver’s 9-year-old child. The impact caused major damage to the bus and led to a second collision involving a Jeep.

Investigators said the initial crash damaged the school bus, including tearing off one of its tires, before the vehicle was pushed into oncoming traffic and struck the Jeep head-on. Deshawn Smith was pronounced dead at the scene, while Adinaluz Prieto Oyola, who was a passenger on the bus, suffered fatal injuries.

The crash left numerous students and occupants requiring medical treatment. Officials later confirmed that three students remained hospitalized but were expected to recover following the collision.

As the Polk County community mourns Adinaluz and Smith, attention has also focused on the actions of school bus driver Jessica Dye, 34, who was praised by officials for her response during the emergency. Sheriff Grady Judd said Dye, despite being injured and trapped inside the damaged bus, was able to free herself and immediately worked to help protect the students.

Polk County Superintendent Fred Heid recognized Dye’s actions and praised her efforts to remain calm while prioritizing the safety of the children. Officials also commended students and bystanders who assisted injured passengers following the crash, including those who attempted to help Adinaluz from the wreckage.

Investigators continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the crash involving the Chevrolet Malibu. Authorities said the driver, Maria Jimenez, 23, cooperated with the investigation, provided access to her phone, and submitted to a blood draw. Preliminary findings did not show signs of impairment, though toxicology results remain pending.

The investigation into why the vehicle crossed the center line remains ongoing. Sheriff Grady Judd said traffic citations related to the lane violation are likely, while criminal charges are not expected unless additional evidence is discovered.
