Atlanta Police Incident Today: Phelan Thorpe Arrested After Allegedly Stealing Patrol Vehicle and Crashing Into Tanker Truck

Atlanta Police Incident Today — A 31-year-old man identified as Phelan Thorpe was arrested Monday after authorities said he allegedly threatened Atlanta police officers, stole a marked patrol vehicle, and fled into Clayton County before crashing the cruiser into a tanker truck on Interstate 675.

According to newly filed arrest warrants, the incident began around 5:17 p.m. Monday when Atlanta Police Department officers responded to a disturbance at a residence in the 2000 block of Thomasville Drive SE. Officers were investigating a report involving a wanted individual who was reportedly armed with a firearm.

Investigators said officers encountered a man matching Thorpe’s description at the residence. The warrants allege that Thorpe became confrontational, yelled at officers, assumed a fighting stance, and threatened to shoot them. Officers reportedly moved away from the area, took cover, and requested additional units as the situation developed.

Authorities said Thorpe then allegedly ran toward a marked Atlanta police cruiser, entered the vehicle, and drove away. The officer who first encountered him reportedly used another patrol vehicle in an attempt to follow, but officers initially lost sight of the stolen cruiser before continuing efforts to locate it.

The pursuit later continued into Clayton County, where authorities said Thorpe was spotted on an expressway. According to the warrants, the stolen police vehicle crashed on Interstate 675 near Forest Parkway after Thorpe allegedly traveled the wrong way on a ramp leading toward southbound lanes, left the roadway, and collided with another vehicle. The patrol cruiser ultimately became lodged underneath a tanker truck.

Following the crash, investigators said Thorpe allegedly exited the damaged patrol vehicle and attempted to leave the area on foot. An Atlanta police sergeant located him and took him into custody. Authorities said Thorpe was taken to a hospital for treatment of minor, non-life-threatening injuries, and no officers or bystanders were reported to have suffered serious injuries.

The arrest warrants list multiple charges against Thorpe, including second-degree hijacking of a motor vehicle, entering an automobile with intent to commit a theft, terroristic threats, obstruction, and driving without a valid license. He also faces charges connected to an earlier investigation involving an alleged attack on a woman near a Midtown MARTA station.

According to investigators, that separate case began Saturday after a woman reported being attacked near Peachtree Place and West Peachtree Street. Authorities allege the attacker took the woman’s purse, knocked her to the ground, and struck her. Thorpe was reportedly wanted in connection with that investigation before officers located him Monday.

The allegations outlined in the arrest warrants have not been proven in court. Thorpe is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty, while authorities continue with the legal process and related investigations.
