Heidi Ann Burge Horton Obituary: Houston, Texas – Former WNBA Player and Burge Twin Dies at 54

Heidi Ann Burge Horton Obituary, HOUSTON, Texas — Heidi Ann Burge Horton, a former WNBA player, international professional basketball standout and one half of the famed Burge twins, died on October 5, 2026, in Houston, Texas, at the age of 54. Her death followed a battle with Grade 4 glioblastoma that began with her diagnosis in October 2025.

Horton underwent surgery, radiation, chemotherapy and additional treatments during her illness. Her cancer temporarily went into remission following tumor resection, radiation and chemotherapy, but the tumors returned in July 2026. She entered palliative care in September before her death.

Born November 12, 1971, in Harbor City, California, Horton faced serious health challenges from an early age. At five months old, doctors discovered a second aorta wrapped around her windpipe, requiring open-heart surgery. Her family was told she had only a 50–50 chance of surviving the procedure.

Her family later moved to Palos Verdes Estates, where Horton attended Palos Verdes High School. She initially focused on theater and volleyball before taking up basketball at the urging of the girls’ basketball coach. She quickly established herself as a standout player, helping the Sea Kings win a Southern Section 3-A championship in 1987. She graduated as the school’s second-highest all-time scorer with 1,183 points.

Horton and her twin sister, Heather, both accepted scholarships to the University of Virginia, becoming important members of a highly successful period in UVA women’s basketball. During her college career, Horton helped the Cavaliers win ACC championships in 1990, 1992 and 1993 and reach three consecutive Final Fours from 1990 through 1992. She also earned a gold medal at the 1990 U.S. Olympic Festival and represented USA Basketball at the U18 and U19 levels.

Her accomplishments extended beyond the court. Horton was a three-year ACC Academic Honor Roll honoree from 1991 through 1993 and finished her UVA career among the school’s all-time leaders in games played, rebounds, blocked shots, double-doubles and scoring. She also represented the United States at the 1993 World University Games, helping the team earn a bronze medal while averaging 4.4 points per game.

After college, Horton spent six seasons playing professionally in Europe, competing in France, Hungary, Italy and Greece between 1993 and 1997. She later became part of WNBA history, joining the Los Angeles Sparks during the league’s inaugural season in 1997 and playing alongside Lisa Leslie. In 1998, she was selected second overall by the Washington Mystics in the WNBA Expansion Draft. Her professional career included a 19-point performance against Phoenix in 1998, along with games in which she recorded 11 rebounds and nine points against Phoenix and 14 points and nine rebounds against Utah in 1997. Her final WNBA appearance came on August 19, 1998, against the Charlotte Sting.

Horton’s life and career left a lasting mark across college, international and professional basketball, while her journey from a life-threatening childhood condition to the highest levels of the sport reflected a remarkable career. She is remembered as an accomplished basketball player and as one half of the Burge twins, whose names became closely associated with women’s basketball. Her family, friends and those who knew her are mourning her passing, and condolences go to them as they remember Heidi Ann Burge Horton and her life in the game she helped shape.
