The Belleville synagogue shooting has been confirmed by police as a deliberate, hate-motivated attack after a gunman opened fire on a police officer outside the Sons of Jacob Synagogue during Yom Kippur.
Belleville Police Chief Murray Rodd said Thursday that the September 20 shooting was directed at the Jewish community during one of its holiest observances.
The officer who was wounded, Const. Jeff Smith, remains in hospital in critical but stable condition and is making progress in his recovery.
What Happened Outside the Belleville Synagogue?
The shooting occurred at approximately 7 p.m. on September 20, 2026, near the Sons of Jacob Synagogue at Victoria and Bleecker avenues in Belleville, Ontario.
According to Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit, a 29-year-old man armed with a shotgun became involved in an exchange of gunfire with police officers near the synagogue.
Const. Jeff Smith was stationed outside the building when the shooting began. A second officer subsequently arrived and discharged a firearm at the suspect. Both Smith and the suspect suffered gunshot wounds and were transported to hospital.
Approximately two dozen people were inside the synagogue at the time, observing Yom Kippur. None of the worshippers were injured.
Police Confirm Hate-Motivated Attack
During a September 24 news conference, Chief Murray Rodd said investigators had determined that the shooting was a hate-motivated crime directed at members of the Jewish community.
Police said the attack was deliberate and occurred during Yom Kippur, one of the most important observances in Judaism.
The police chief also said the suspect had the means and ammunition to potentially cause a mass-casualty attack.
Authorities released additional information about the moments before the shooting, including an account that the suspect made an antisemitic statement before opening fire.
Const. Jeff Smith’s Condition
Const. Jeff Smith suffered multiple gunshot wounds and remains hospitalized.
Police said Thursday that Smith was making positive progress, although his injuries are serious and he is expected to undergo additional surgeries.
Earlier reports described his condition as critical but stable.
Smith is a 13-year veteran of the Belleville Police Service and was working outside the synagogue when the attack occurred.
His family has received an outpouring of support from the public and the wider community while he continues his recovery.
Suspect Sean Ward Dies
The suspected gunman was identified as Sean Ward, 29, of Quinte West.
The Ontario Special Investigations Unit said Ward died in hospital on the night of September 21 after suffering life-threatening injuries during the exchange of gunfire.
The Canadian Armed Forces also confirmed that a man named Sean Ward matching the suspect’s description had served in the military from 2017 to 2022 as an infantry soldier.
Because Ward died following the shooting, the ongoing investigations are focused on establishing the full circumstances of the incident and the actions of the responding officers.
Investigation Into the Shooting
Two investigations are underway.
The Ontario Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is examining the actions of the police officers involved in the exchange of gunfire.
Belleville Police are separately investigating the suspect’s actions, including the circumstances surrounding the attack and its motive.
The SIU has appealed for witnesses, photographs and video that could help investigators reconstruct what happened.
No Synagogue Worshippers Were Injured
Despite the intensity of the shooting, authorities said none of the approximately two dozen people inside the synagogue were injured.
The incident nevertheless caused significant fear among members of the congregation and the broader Jewish community.
The synagogue had police protection outside during the Yom Kippur observance, with officials later crediting the responding officers with preventing further casualties.
Belleville Community Responds
The shooting has prompted an outpouring of support for Const. Smith, his family and members of Belleville’s Jewish community.
Community members have gathered to express solidarity following the attack, while a fundraising effort has also been launched to support Smith and his family during his recovery.
Police have asked the public to respect the family’s privacy as Smith continues receiving treatment.
