Grey was born on June 4, 1947, in San Diego, California. His basketball abilities emerged during his years at Crawford High School, where he established himself as a standout player. He later continued his education and basketball career at California Western University, now known as United States International University.

Standing 6 feet 8 inches tall, Grey played the center position and brought a combination of size, strength, and finesse to the court. His development as a collegiate player eventually opened the door to professional basketball and an opportunity to compete in the American Basketball Association.

Grey joined the ABA in 1968 as a member of the Los Angeles Stars, appearing for the team during the 1968–69 season. His time in the league came during a period when professional basketball was experiencing significant growth and the ABA was establishing itself as a major force in the sport.

The following season, Grey continued his professional career with the New York Nets, playing during the 1969–70 season.
