Stan Kroenke Agrees to Buy Los Angeles Angels From Arte Moreno in Record-Setting MLB Deal

The Los Angeles Angels are heading toward a new era after billionaire sports owner Stan Kroenke reached an agreement to acquire a controlling interest in the Major League Baseball franchise from the Moreno family.

Kroenke Sports & Entertainment announced the agreement Tuesday, September 1, ending months of frustration among Angels fans and bringing Arte Moreno’s 23-year ownership tenure closer to its conclusion.

The transaction is expected to close during the first quarter of 2027, provided it receives Major League Baseball approval and satisfies the remaining closing conditions.

The official announcement did not disclose a purchase price.

However, multiple reports indicate the deal is expected to surpass the recent $3.9 billion sale of the San Diego Padres, potentially making the Angels transaction the most expensive sale of an MLB franchise.

For Kroenke, 79, acquiring the Angels adds baseball to an extraordinary sports portfolio that already includes the Los Angeles Rams, Arsenal, Denver Nuggets, Colorado Avalanche and Colorado Rapids.

For Angels fans, however, the bigger story may simply be the end of the Moreno era.

After years of losing seasons, unsuccessful attempts to build around superstars and increasingly vocal demands for Moreno to sell, one of baseball’s longest-running ownership controversies is finally moving toward a resolution.

Stan Kroenke Reaches Agreement to Buy the Angels

Kroenke Sports & Entertainment confirmed Tuesday that it has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire a controlling interest in the Angels from the Moreno family.

The transaction is not technically complete.

It still requires approval from Major League Baseball and must satisfy customary closing requirements.

KSE expects the process to conclude during the first quarter of 2027.

Kroenke described the Angels as a historic franchise positioned in an attractive market and expressed optimism about the organization’s future.

Moreno similarly confirmed the agreement, saying his family believes KSE’s experience and history of success make it the right organization to take control of the franchise.

Once the transaction closes, it will end a period of Angels history that began in 2003.

How Much Is Stan Kroenke Paying for the Angels?

The official purchase price has not been publicly disclosed.

That distinction is important because reports about the valuation are still emerging.

The Los Angeles Times initially reported the transaction would exceed the record price recently paid for the San Diego Padres.

The Padres were sold for approximately $3.9 billion in May 2026.

The Wall Street Journal subsequently reported the Angels transaction at approximately $4 billion.

If the final figure reaches that level, Kroenke’s acquisition would establish a new Major League Baseball franchise sale record.

For comparison, Moreno bought the Angels from The Walt Disney Company for approximately $183.5 million in 2003.

A sale near $4 billion would therefore represent an extraordinary increase in franchise value during his ownership.

Forbes had valued the Angels at approximately $2.8 billion earlier in 2026.

The difference illustrates the premium buyers can be willing to pay for control of a major professional sports franchise in the Southern California market.

Who Is Stan Kroenke?

Enos Stanley Kroenke is an American billionaire businessman and one of the most powerful sports owners in the world.

He was born July 29, 1947, in Columbia, Missouri, and grew up in the small Missouri community of Mora.

Kroenke built much of his wealth through real estate before developing an enormous portfolio of professional sports franchises.

He founded Kroenke Group, a real estate development company, in 1983.

His business interests eventually expanded substantially through shopping centers, apartment developments, ranches and other real estate holdings.

Kroenke’s marriage to Ann Walton Kroenke, a member of the Walmart family, also connected him to one of America’s wealthiest families.

But over several decades, Kroenke has developed a sports empire distinct enough to make him one of the most influential figures in global professional sports.

Adding the Angels pushes that empire into Major League Baseball.

Stan Kroenke Already Owns the Los Angeles Rams

Southern California sports fans are already extremely familiar with Kroenke because of his ownership of the Los Angeles Rams.

Kroenke initially became a minority owner of the Rams when the franchise moved from Los Angeles to St. Louis in 1995.

He eventually became majority owner.

His most controversial move came years later when he pursued relocating the franchise back to Los Angeles.

The NFL approved the Rams’ return in 2016.

Kroenke then financed the development of SoFi Stadium in Inglewood.

The stadium became the centerpiece of the enormous Hollywood Park development and opened in 2020.

The Rams subsequently won Super Bowl LVI at their home stadium in February 2022.

That championship helped validate Kroenke’s ambitious return to Los Angeles from a competitive standpoint, although the relocation remained deeply unpopular among many fans in St. Louis.

The Angels acquisition gives Kroenke another major Southern California sports property, this time based in Orange County.

Kroenke Also Owns Arsenal

Kroenke’s influence extends well beyond American sports.

Through Kroenke Sports & Entertainment and related holdings, his family controls Arsenal, one of the most famous football clubs in England.

His involvement with Arsenal began with an investment in 2007.

Kroenke gradually increased his stake and eventually obtained full ownership.

His tenure was initially controversial among portions of Arsenal’s fan base, particularly during periods when supporters believed the club was not investing aggressively enough to compete for the Premier League title.

The relationship changed as Arsenal improved competitively and increased investment in its playing squad and infrastructure.

Today, Arsenal represents one of the most valuable properties within the Kroenke family’s international sports portfolio.

And it is far from the only championship-caliber organization under the KSE umbrella.

Denver Nuggets and Colorado Avalanche Are Part of the Empire

Kroenke Sports & Entertainment’s Colorado holdings include the Denver Nuggets of the NBA and the Colorado Avalanche of the NHL.

Both organizations have achieved major success during the Kroenke era.

The Avalanche won the Stanley Cup in 2022.

One year later, the Nuggets won their first NBA championship in franchise history.

Those titles came shortly after the Rams won the Super Bowl.

The championship run across multiple leagues dramatically strengthened KSE’s reputation as a sports ownership organization capable of building successful franchises.

Kroenke’s portfolio also includes Major League Soccer’s Colorado Rapids.

The addition of the Angels fills one of the few remaining major gaps.

Kroenke now has a presence across the NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL, MLS and English Premier League.

Why Kroenke Wanted the Angels

The Angels offer more than another professional sports team.

They provide Kroenke Sports & Entertainment with a much larger year-round footprint in Southern California.

The Rams already anchor KSE’s operations in Inglewood.

SoFi Stadium and the surrounding 300-acre Hollywood Park development host football, concerts and major entertainment events.

The area is also expected to play an important role during the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The Angels extend that influence south into Orange County.

The region has a population of more than three million people, a large corporate presence and an enormous tourism economy.

Baseball also fills months of the calendar when the NFL is not playing.

From a broader sports-business perspective, Kroenke isn’t simply purchasing another team.

He is strengthening KSE’s control of sports and entertainment properties across one of America’s largest markets.

Arte Moreno’s 23-Year Angels Ownership Is Ending

For Angels fans, the sale is equally notable because of the man leaving.

Arte Moreno purchased the franchise from Disney in 2003.

At the time, the Angels were coming off their only World Series championship, won in 2002.

Moreno also made history as Major League Baseball’s first Latino controlling owner.

The beginning of his tenure was successful.

The Angels won five American League West titles between 2004 and 2009.

They reached the American League Championship Series twice during that period.

For several years, the franchise was one of the strongest organizations in the American League.

Then the trajectory changed.

The Angels have not won a playoff game since 2009.

They have not reached the postseason since 2014.

By 2026, frustration had reached a breaking point.

Angels Couldn’t Win With Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani

Perhaps the most damaging part of Moreno’s legacy is what happened while the Angels possessed two extraordinary players.

Mike Trout developed into one of the greatest players of his generation.

He won three American League MVP awards.

Then the Angels signed Shohei Ohtani, who developed into an unprecedented two-way superstar capable of dominating as both a hitter and pitcher.

For six seasons, Trout and Ohtani were teammates.

The Angels never reached the postseason during that period.

That failure became symbolic of the organization’s wider problems.

Having two historically gifted players on the same roster should have provided the foundation for a championship contender.

Instead, roster construction, pitching problems, injuries and unsuccessful acquisitions repeatedly prevented the Angels from building a sufficiently deep team around them.

Ohtani eventually left for the Los Angeles Dodgers after the 2023 season.

He immediately won a World Series championship in his first year with the Dodgers.

For Angels fans, the contrast was painful.

Expensive Signings Frequently Failed

Moreno was not an owner who simply refused to spend money.

The Angels regularly committed substantial amounts to star players.

The problem was how effectively that money was spent.

The organization signed Albert Pujols to a massive contract before the 2012 season.

Pujols remained a productive major leaguer for portions of his Angels tenure but never reproduced the extraordinary performance that made him a legend with the St. Louis Cardinals.

Josh Hamilton signed another major contract and lasted only two seasons with the Angels.

Anthony Rendon’s seven-year, $245 million deal became another source of frustration because injuries repeatedly prevented him from staying on the field.

Meanwhile, the organization struggled to build enough pitching depth and a sustainable player-development system.

The result was an increasingly expensive roster without corresponding postseason success.

Fans Had Been Calling for Moreno to Sell

By 2026, dissatisfaction was no longer subtle.

Angels fans regularly directed chants at Moreno demanding that he sell the franchise.

Signs and public criticism became common.

The frustration was amplified by the fact that Moreno had previously appeared ready to leave.

In August 2022, the Angels announced that the Moreno family had begun exploring a possible sale.

The announcement immediately created speculation about potential buyers.

Then, in January 2023, Moreno reversed course.

He announced that the Angels were no longer for sale and that his family would retain ownership.

For supporters hoping for a change, the reversal was deeply disappointing.

Three years later, the outcome is different.

This time there is a definitive agreement with Kroenke Sports & Entertainment.

Angels Face One of Baseball’s Longest Playoff Droughts

The competitive situation Kroenke is inheriting is difficult.

The Angels are headed toward another losing season in 2026.

They have endured 11 consecutive losing seasons and are approaching a 12th consecutive year without reaching the playoffs.

Both streaks rank among the worst current runs in Major League Baseball.

That means KSE isn’t buying a finished championship contender.

It is acquiring a franchise requiring significant work.

The organization must improve player development, roster construction and pitching.

Questions also surround the long-term future of Angel Stadium.

The stadium opened in 1966 and is one of Major League Baseball’s oldest ballparks.

Previous attempts to create a major stadium and surrounding development project became embroiled in controversy.

Kroenke’s experience with large-scale real estate and stadium projects therefore makes the future of the Angels’ home particularly interesting.

Could Kroenke Transform Angel Stadium?

No official plan for a new stadium or redevelopment has been announced as part of the acquisition.

Still, Kroenke’s history makes the issue impossible to ignore.

SoFi Stadium wasn’t developed as a standalone football venue.

It anchors Hollywood Park, a massive mixed-use district incorporating entertainment, commercial and residential development.

KSE specifically highlighted its experience with teams, venues, media platforms and mixed-use districts when announcing the Angels transaction.

Angel Stadium sits on an enormous property in Anaheim.

How Kroenke eventually approaches that real estate could become one of the most consequential parts of his ownership.

Renovating the existing stadium, replacing it or developing the surrounding land could potentially involve billions of dollars.

For now, however, any specific redevelopment plan would be speculation.

The acquisition itself still has to close.

What Happens to Arte Moreno?

Moreno will remain connected to the Angels until the transaction is completed.

The agreement involves KSE acquiring a controlling interest from the Moreno family.

The sale is expected to close in the first quarter of 2027.

Until then, the current ownership structure remains in place while the parties work through MLB approval and closing requirements.

Once completed, Moreno’s tenure will end after approximately 23 years.

His legacy will be complicated.

The early years produced division championships and consistent postseason appearances.

He helped make the Angels a significant force in Southern California baseball.

The franchise’s value also increased enormously during his ownership.

But the later years were defined by persistent losing, failed roster construction and growing fan anger.

The inability to win with Trout and Ohtani will likely remain one of the defining criticisms of the Moreno era.

Stan Kroenke’s Sports Empire Gets Even Bigger

The Angels acquisition puts Kroenke in an exceptionally rare position.

Few individuals control major professional franchises across so many sports.

The portfolio includes:

  • Los Angeles Rams in the NFL
  • Los Angeles Angels in MLB, pending completion
  • Denver Nuggets in the NBA
  • Colorado Avalanche in the NHL
  • Colorado Rapids in MLS
  • Arsenal in the English Premier League

There are also extensive venue, media, esports and real estate interests connected to the wider Kroenke organization.

And several of those teams have won championships in recent years.

That record is one reason Angels fans may view the sale with optimism.

Kroenke has substantial financial resources.

His organization has experience building sports infrastructure.

KSE has also overseen championship teams.

None of that guarantees the Angels will immediately become contenders.

Baseball presents its own challenges, and financial power alone has never guaranteed success in MLB.

But after more than a decade without postseason baseball, simply having a new ownership direction represents a major change.

What the Sale Could Mean for Mike Trout

One immediate question concerns Mike Trout.

The longtime Angels star has spent his entire major league career with the organization.

He is one of the most accomplished players in franchise history and remains under a long-term contract.

Yet much of his career has unfolded without meaningful postseason opportunities.

A new ownership group could eventually reconsider virtually every aspect of the franchise’s strategy.

That includes how the organization builds around Trout and whether his remaining years should be part of a broader competitive reset.

KSE has not announced specific baseball personnel decisions.

There is therefore no verified indication that Trout will be traded or that the organization plans a particular roster strategy.

Those decisions will come later.

The first step is completing the ownership transition.

A New Era Is Coming to Anaheim

For years, Angels fans have wondered when meaningful change would arrive.

The franchise had superstars.

It spent money.

It played in one of America’s largest markets.

Yet season after season ended without playoff baseball.

Eventually, frustration became directed toward ownership itself.

Fans chanted for Arte Moreno to sell.

In 2022, it appeared he might.

In 2023, he changed his mind.

Now, in 2026, an agreement has finally been reached.

Stan Kroenke isn’t entering Anaheim as an unknown businessman attempting his first sports investment.

He arrives with the Rams, Arsenal, Nuggets, Avalanche and Rapids already inside an enormous global sports portfolio.

His teams have won championships.

His company has built one of the world’s most ambitious sports developments in Southern California.

And now Kroenke is preparing to take control of a baseball franchise that has spent more than a decade searching for a way back to relevance.

The sale still requires MLB approval and is not expected to close until early 2027.

But for Angels fans who spent years demanding a change at the top, September 1, 2026 may ultimately be remembered as the day the Arte Moreno era finally began to end.
