Russ Moses Obituary, ATLANTA, Ga. — Russ Moses, 24, an Atlanta Police Department recruit, was killed in a crash Tuesday morning on Moreland Avenue at McDonough Boulevard, according to officials.
The crash occurred shortly before 7:17 a.m. near the intersection of Moreland Avenue and McDonough Boulevard. The incident involved at least one vehicle and a motorcycle, officials said.
Moses was reportedly on his way to work when the crash occurred. Emergency medical personnel transported him to Grady Memorial Hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
Moses was in his 16th week of training with the Atlanta Police Department and was part of Class 302. His death has affected fellow recruits and members of the department as they mourn the loss of someone preparing to begin a career in public service.
Before joining the Atlanta Police Department, Moses had served for two years with the Atlanta Department of Corrections and was also a member of the U.S. Coast Guard. Officials described his service and commitment to helping others as an important part of his story.
Atlanta officials said Moses was well regarded by his colleagues in the Department of Corrections. Chief of Corrections Elder Dancy said Moses made an effort to ensure people in custody were treated with dignity.
Training for the remaining Atlanta police recruits has been paused as the department gives them time to grieve. Police Chief Darin Schierbaum described the loss as a difficult moment for the recruits, who had formed a close bond with Moses.
The circumstances surrounding the crash remain under investigation. Officials said the other driver involved was not injured. As the investigation continues, Russ Moses is being remembered as a young public servant who was preparing to dedicate his career to serving the Atlanta community.
