Charles Henry “Kippy” Brown Obituary, SWEETWATER, Tenn. — Charles Henry “Kippy” Brown, a beloved football coach, mentor, and Super Bowl champion whose influence extended across college football and the NFL, has died at the age of 71. Brown was born on March 6, 1955, in Sweetwater, Tennessee, and spent much of his life dedicated to football and the development of the players he coached.
Brown’s football career began at Sweetwater High School, where he helped lead the team to back-to-back state championships in 1971 and 1972. He later played quarterback at Memphis State University from 1975 to 1977, where he helped engineer a memorable upset of seventh-ranked Auburn. In that game, Brown completed 7 of 11 passes for 103 yards and two touchdowns, including a 37-yard touchdown pass.
After earning a degree in Communications, Brown moved into coaching and went on to build a career spanning nearly four decades. His coaching journey included positions at Tennessee, Louisville, the New York Jets, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Miami Dolphins, Green Bay Packers, Houston Texans, Detroit Lions, and Seattle Seahawks.
During his time at Tennessee, Brown played an important role in developing the program’s reputation as “Wide Receiver U,” working with numerous receivers who went on to successful NFL careers. His impact continued in the professional ranks, where he coached and mentored players including Andre Johnson during his early years with the Houston Texans. Johnson became the first Texans offensive player selected to the Pro Bowl following his standout 2004 season.
Brown reached the highest point of his coaching career in 2014 as wide receivers coach of the Seattle Seahawks. That season, Seattle defeated the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XLVIII, giving Brown a Super Bowl championship and another significant achievement in a career filled with memorable moments.
Brown retired from coaching in 2015, leaving behind a reputation for football knowledge, humility, and dedication to his players and fellow coaches. His connection to his hometown remained strong, and in June 2014, Sweetwater honored him by naming the road circling Sweetwater High School “Kippy Brown Way.”
