SOUTH AUSTRALIA — The search for four-year-old Gus Lamont continues nearly one year after the young boy disappeared from his family’s remote property in South Australia, with investigators still working to determine what happened to him.
Gus, whose full name is August Lamont, was reported missing from Oak Park Station near Yunta on September 27, 2025. His disappearance initially prompted an extensive missing-person search across the vast outback property.
Months later, police changed the direction of the investigation, declaring the case a major crime and indicating that they no longer believed Gus had simply wandered away.
Despite repeated searches involving specialist police, volunteers, defence personnel, aircraft, dogs and other resources, no confirmed trace of the boy has been found.
Gus Lamont Disappeared From Oak Park Station
Gus was four years old when he disappeared from the family’s sheep station in South Australia’s Mid North.
Police were initially told that Gus had been playing outside the property before he could no longer be located. The remote location and enormous size of the surrounding property made the early search particularly challenging.
Oak Park Station is located near Yunta, roughly 275 to 300 kilometres northeast of Adelaide.

Investigation Becomes a Major Crime Case
The investigation changed significantly in February 2026.
South Australia Police announced that Gus’s disappearance had been declared a major crime. Investigators said they had identified a person who had lived at Oak Park Station as a suspect.
Police have repeatedly emphasized that Gus’s parents are not suspects.
Investigators have also worked through information concerning people who were at or around the property around the time Gus disappeared. More than 500 people were identified as having been in or around Oak Park Station, according to police.
The investigation has involved examining inconsistencies in accounts and reconstructing the movements of people connected to the property.
Extensive Searches Have Produced No Answer
The search for Gus has been one of the most extensive missing-child investigations undertaken in South Australia.
Authorities have searched parts of the enormous property using specialist police teams, State Emergency Service volunteers, Australian Defence Force personnel, aircraft, mounted officers, an Indigenous tracker, specialist dogs and other resources.
Investigators have also examined specific locations including dams, a water tank, an outhouse and mine shafts.
Repeated searches have failed to produce publicly confirmed evidence explaining what happened to Gus.
In March, police returned to the property after significant rainfall, hoping the changed conditions might create new opportunities to locate evidence. That search also ended without a breakthrough.
Renewed Search After Heavy Rain
Police again returned to Oak Park Station in May 2026 for another multi-day search.
The operation was partly prompted by heavy rainfall in the region, which investigators believed could potentially reveal evidence that had previously been difficult to detect.
However, authorities later confirmed that the renewed search did not uncover additional evidence relating to Gus’s disappearance.
Police said they had not ruled out returning to the property again as the investigation continued.
Family Continues to Seek Answers
Gus’s parents, Josh and Jess, have publicly appealed for information about their son.
In a statement released earlier in the investigation, they described the disappearance as devastating and asked anyone who might have information to come forward, even if they believed the information was insignificant.
The family has continued to seek answers while investigators work to establish what happened to Gus.
Nearly One Year With No Confirmed Trace
As the anniversary of Gus’s disappearance approaches, the central question remains unanswered: what happened to the four-year-old after he disappeared from Oak Park Station?
Police have continued to investigate the case as a major crime rather than treating it simply as a child who wandered away.
The investigation remains active, and authorities have indicated they will continue examining information and potential evidence connected to Gus’s disappearance.
For his family, however, the passage of time has brought no resolution. Gus remains missing, and there has been no confirmed discovery that establishes where he is or what happened to him.
