Kevon Drumgold Obituary, NORFOLK, Va. — Kevon Drumgold, 16, a student at Norview High School, was killed Wednesday afternoon after a shooting in the school parking lot following dismissal, according to the Norfolk Police Department.
Police responded to the 6800 block of Sewells Point Road at approximately 2:25 p.m. after receiving reports of gunfire. Officers found two 16-year-old boys suffering from gunshot wounds. Both teenagers were taken to a hospital, with one suffering life-threatening injuries and the other sustaining non-life-threatening injuries.
The teenager with life-threatening injuries later died from his wounds and was identified as Drumgold. Police said one victim was shot in the upper body while the other was shot in the lower body. Authorities have not released additional information about the surviving victim.
Norfolk Police Chief Mark Talbot said the two victims were in the school parking lot after dismissal when they were approached by another group of teenagers. A dispute reportedly followed, before a teenager from the other group allegedly pulled out a firearm and opened fire. Police believe four to six shots were fired.
Norfolk Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Jeff Rose confirmed that one student died in the shooting and said the incident involved Norview High School students. He also said security measures kept students at nearby Norview Middle School safe, although their dismissal was delayed.
Investigators said they know the identity of the person believed to be responsible and are actively searching for the suspect. Police said they have strong leads, but no arrest had been announced at the time of the latest update. Norfolk Commonwealth’s Attorney Ramin Fatehi also responded to the scene and urged parents to speak with their children about the dangers of firearms and encouraged anyone with information to cooperate with investigators.
The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting and pursue the suspect. Additional information regarding possible charges and the investigation is expected to be released by police as it becomes available.
