Lauren Carter Obituary, MARINGOUIN, La. — Lauren Carter, 22, and her 6-year-old son, Layton Carter, were killed Monday morning after a fire broke out at the Ridgewood Apartments in Maringouin, according to the Iberville Parish Sheriff’s Office.
Emergency crews were called to the apartment complex on Ridgewood Drive at approximately 6:30 a.m. on August 31, 2026, following reports of a fire. The Maringouin Fire Department responded to the scene alongside Iberville Parish deputies and officers with the Maringouin Police Department.
According to Maringouin Fire Chief Stanley Washington, a neighbor helped Lauren escape from the burning apartment. Despite efforts by emergency responders, she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Firefighters also located Layton inside the apartment. Chief Washington said the child was found deceased upstairs as crews worked through heavy smoke and intense heat. A neighbor, Jamison Marshall, described the difficult conditions firefighters faced while attempting to reach the boy.
Marshall remembered Lauren as a quiet and hardworking mother who focused on caring for her young son. He said she would go to work, take care of Layton, and generally kept to herself, describing her as someone neighbors knew as a devoted mother.
The fire also forced more than 10 residents to leave their homes, according to the Iberville Parish Sheriff’s Office. Firefighters continued working at the scene after the initial response, including efforts to extinguish flames that had reached the attic area. Heavy smoke and heat complicated the operation.
The deadly fire has deeply affected the Maringouin community, where residents said incidents of this nature are uncommon. The circumstances surrounding the fire remain under investigation, and authorities have not yet determined what caused the blaze.
As investigators continue examining the scene and working to establish what led to the fire, Lauren and Layton are being remembered in connection with the lives they shared and the community they called home. Their deaths have left neighbors and residents mourning the loss of a young mother and her child, with condolences extended to everyone affected by the tragedy.
