Christopher DeLong And Adam Dowdy Obituary, COLUMBIA, S.C. Shooting Update — Law enforcement have identified 33-year-old Adam Tyler Dowdy as the suspect accused of shooting at police officers during a domestic violence response in Columbia, South Carolina, resulting in the loss of Columbia Police Officer Christopher DeLong and injuries to another officer.
DeLong, 29, was critically injured during the confrontation near Southeast Park late Saturday morning. Authorities said he later passed away from his injuries while undergoing surgery. DeLong was a father of two and had served as an officer with the Columbia Police Department.
A second officer, identified as David Dymock, was also hurt during the exchange of gunfire. Dymock was stated to be in stable condition following the occurrence.
The shooting happened after officers responded to a 911 call involving a domestic violence-related situation. Court records indicate Dowdy was reportedly subject to a restraining order at the time of the confrontation and was allegedly violating the order when the call that prompted the police reaction was made.
Dowdy was also killed during the exchange of gunfire. Agencies have not publicly provided a complete account of the sequence of events leading to the shooting, and investigators are continuing to reconstruct what happened before, during and after the confrontation.
Court documents indicate Dowdy had previously faced 11 misdemeanor charges stemming from a June 9, 2025, event. The allegations included family violence battery, simple battery, simple assault and obstructing or hindering a person attempting to make an emergency telephone call. The existence of those charges does not establish guilt on the underlying allegations.
Dowdy reportedly worked as a tile installer and operated his own small business, Dowdy Tile, for approximately 10 years. Social media posts attributed to him reportedly included criticism of law enforcement, including comments questioning police responses and accusing officers of abusing their authority. Agencies have not publicly said that the posts were a direct cause of the fatal confrontation.
Investigators are expected to examine the original domestic violence call, police communications, physical evidence, witness accounts and the circumstances surrounding the exchange of gunfire. The deaths of DeLong and Dowdy, along with Dymock’s injuries, remain part of the ongoing inquiry as law enforcement work to establish a complete timeline of the encounter.
